How to choose between using CBN grinding wheel or diamond grinding wheel?
If grinding wheels are distinguished by abrasives, they can be divided into two categories: ※ traditional abrasives and ※ super abrasives
CBN and diamond belong to the category of super abrasives, and are called super abrasives because their hardness is much higher than other traditional abrasives. So, both are super abrasives, how do you distinguish between the two, and how do you choose the grinding wheel abrasives that are suitable for your own production? Firstly, we need to understand the characteristics of both.
What is cubic boron nitride (CBN)?
Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN): It was first synthesized by General Electric (GE) in the 1950s using artificial methods under high temperature and pressure conditions. Its hardness is second only to diamond and far higher than other materials, so it is collectively referred to as super abrasive along with diamond.
What is diamond abrasive?
Abrasives with high hardness, natural diamonds have high stability, but they are also expensive. Artificial diamonds are often used to make grinding wheels.
How to decide whether to choose CBN or diamond abrasive? Selection criterion (1): In terms of the basic logic of grinding, the hardness of the abrasive should be four times higher than that of the workpiece. If the grinding material is tungsten steel (superhard alloy), it can be found from the hardness table below that only diamond DIA has a hardness four times higher than tungsten steel (superhard). Therefore, Sheng Yao suggests using diamond abrasives.
Selection criteria (2): "Material" of the workpiece. If the workpiece is made of "iron containing material", use CBN
If the workpiece is made of non-ferrous materials: use diamond
Because if diamond is used to grind iron-based materials, it will react chemically with carbon in the iron, which will accelerate the wear rate of diamond, make the abrasive easy to passivate, reduce cutting force, and require dressing, resulting in poor machining efficiency. Therefore, diamond grinding wheels are not suitable for grinding materials containing iron.
Selection criteria (3): Grinding wheel "speed"
Due to the fact that diamond is a thermal decay type abrasive (high temperature can cause rapid wear), when the grinding wheel speed is high and the grinding temperature is high, it will cause the grinding wheel to wear too quickly. CBN is a micro crushing structure, and when the grinding wheel speed is fast, it can exert the self sharpening characteristics of the abrasive and maintain sharpness.
The above selection criteria are shared with everyone to select suitable grinding wheel abrasives.
